Disabled by Definition Nominated for Award

On the 22nd of October, the Student Radio Association hosted an online nomination party for the Student Radio Awards. Having only been part of the student radio for a year, I didn't expect much, but I still decided to put myself forward for two awards: best newcomer and best podcast.

As it was digital, I joined a call with some of my student radio friends, most of whom are third years or graduates. Having no idea what was to come, I sat with my microphone muted and waited for all the names to come in. Each category had six nominees, and it took a while for mine to come round. After seeing newcomer was unsuccessful, I realised just how important to me it would be if I got any nominations at all, but I also knew that I had a few more years to go yet.

Then Best Podcast came round. The nominees, I had worked out, were read alphabetically based on station, and Utter being so far down that list, I knew that I had to wait for all six to come through. Then after five names had been read, I heard my name, and the words:

Disabled by Definition, by Teifi James, Utter Radio

And the biggest smile came across my face.

After all the nominations had been announced, I realised how much of a deal this was:

  1. I had been nominated after only a year of student radio,

  2. I was Utter Radio's first ever SRA nomination,

  3. and I finally felt like all the work I had put in over the last few years were finally paying off.

So now all I can do is wait until the 6th of November, to see if I placed, but at this point, I am just happy to be able to say:

Disabled by Definition, SRAs 2020 nominee!

Many thanks to all my lovely guests: Dan, Ellen, Andy, Deanna, Elliot and my mother Cath.

Thank you to all my friends at Radio Platfform and Utter Radio for helping to push this podcast and me to be the best it can be.

Thank you to my family for all the support they have given me over the years.

And a big thank you to anyone who has listened to me go on about my hearing, and accepted it as part of who I am.
